Awa Odori, Tokushima

Awa Odori, of Tokushima origin, is the most famous dance festival in Japan and one of the biggest summer festivals. It runs from August 12-15 annually and is known as the Festival of the Dancing Fool because of a chant the dancers shout: "The dancer and the viewer are both fools, so why not dance?" (踊るあほに見るあほ、同じあほなら踊らなそんそん!) Groups from all over Japan come out to dance, and we foreigners would also participate annually. "Yatto-sa yatto-sa!" (Aug. 2005)
